Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from Simikot to Simikot

Mt. Kailash, 6,740 m. is situated to the north of the Himalayan barrier, wholly within Tibet. It is the perfect mountain with awesome beauty, with 4 great faces. It is the spiritual enterance for four great religions: Tibetan Buddhism, Hinduism, the Jain religion and the pre-Buddhist animistic religion – Bonpo. To Tibetans it is known as Khang Rimpoche (Precious Jewel of Snow) and they see it as the navel of the world. It is said that a stream from the Mount Kailash pours into a nearby lake and from here rivers flow in the four cardinal directions. Kailash Mansarovar tour is truly a trip of a lifetime. The River of the Lion Mouth to the North, the River of the Horse Mouth to the east, the River of the Peacock Mouth to the south and the River of the Elephant Mouth to the West. Strangely enough, four major rivers do indeed originate near Kailash, the Indus, the Yarlung Tsangpo (Brahmaputra), the Karnali and the Sutlej. Tibetans believe that it is the residence of Demchog, a fierce looking tantric deity who lives there with his consort, Dorje Phagmo. For the Tibetans also, it is a particularly special place in that their poet saint Milarepa, spent several years here meditating in a cave.

For the Hindus Mount Kailash is the earthly manifestation of Mt. Meru, their spiritual centre of the universe, described as a fantastic ‘world pillar’ 84,000 miles high, around which all else revolves, its roots in the lowest hell and its summit kissing the heavens. Kailash Mansarovar yatra holds a great significance among the Hindus. On the top live their most revered God, Shiva, and his consort Parvati. For the Jains, an Indian religious group, Kailash is the site where their first prophet achieved enlightenment. For the older, more ancient religion of Bon, it is the site where its founder Shanrab is said to have descended from heaven. It was formerly the spiritual centre of Zhang Zung, the ancient Bon Empire that once included all of western Tibet. Bon people walk around the mountain in a counter clockwise manner, unlike the other religions. Over the centuries pilgrims have constantly journeyed immense distances to achieve enlightenment or cleanse themselves of sin, braving enormous distances, particularly harsh weather and bandit attacks. A tour of Mount Kailash will give you an opportunity to explore this tantalizing place which has a great religious significance and is worshipped by Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and some others.

Situated amidst a lush green natural setting on the bank of the sacred Bagmati River, the temple built in Pagoda Style has gilded roof and richly carved silver doors. Pashupatinath is the centre of annual pilgrimage on the day of Shivaratri which falls in the month of February/March. Behind the temples are the cremation grounds. Boudhnath: One of the oldest and the biggest Buddhist monuments ever built in Nepal, Furthermore it is one of the holiest Buddhist sites in Kathmandu. Boudhanath is an imposing structure standing some 36 meters. The Stupa stands on the massive three level mandala style Platforms surrounded by colourful private family houses. Listed in the UNESCO World Heritage list this site is considered very much like Mecca for the Buddhists. After lunch transfer to domestic airport fly to Nepalgunj. Dinner and overnight at hotel.
On the third day of your Kailash Mansarovar yatra, you will fly to Simikot. After an early breakfast, transfer to airport to board a scheduled flight to Simikot on fixed wing aircraft. Our guide will be waiting for you at the airport and assist you to checkin to the Sun Valley resort. Day rest for acclimatization. Dinner and overnight at guest house.
Your fourth day of Kailash Mansarovar tour is mainly marked by your flight to Hilsha and drive to Purang. From Simikot, an early morning chartered helicopter will ferry the group to Hilsa which has an unmettalic air- strip. Our sherpa team will assist the group for a short 45 minutes uphill walk to the Tibetan Border city called Sher. 10 minutes walk in good road to reach Sher immigration point at China side. After finishing the immigration formalities, you start to drive in 4500 land Cruiser which is waiting for you with our Tibetan guide. Dinner and overnight at local guest house.
Drive to Mansarovar which lies at 4,560m (14592ft) above mean sea level and is one of the highest fresh-water lakes in the world. It is relatively round in shape with a circumference of 88 kms. Its depth is 90m (288ft.) and its surface area is 320 square kms. The lake freezes in winter and melts only in the spring. Manasarovar is the source of the Sutlej River which is the easternmost large tributary of the Indus. Visiting Mansarovar is one of the best experiences and is an integral part of the Kailash Mansarovar trip. Nearby are the sources of the Brahmaputra River, the Indus River, and the Karnali River (Ghaghara) which is an important tributary of the Ganges River, so this region is the hydrographic nexus of the Himalaya. Dinner and overnight at local guest house.
On the sixth day of Kailash Mansarovar tour, you drive to Darchen. After breakfast, it is a day for Puja and Holy bath in the holy lake. We will be doing Mansarover Parikarma by Jeep (4520m) 115km/ 4-5hrs. On the way, we will stop near Trugu Gompa for Holy Bath in Holy Lake Mansarovar. During this parikarma, we will have a picnic lunch on the bank of Holy Lake Mansarovar. Dinner and overnight in at local guest house.
After breakfast, drive approx. 13 Kms. to Tarboche, the trek starting point of Kailash Parikrama. Tarboche is also known as the outer "Asthapath". The first day of our Kora is a gradual walk with multitudes of other local pilgrims chanting and praying. The trail leads us to few ups and downs till we reach our camp at Dirapuk (4860m) 7km/5-6 hours trek. Camping on the nice grassy meadows with a view of Kailash, north-west face. Dinner and Overnight at local guest house.
On the 8th day of Kailash Mansarovar Yatra,. your circumbulation (Kora) leadss to much higher side of the holy path just beneath the Holy Mount Kailash. The walk will bring us to one of the highest point at Drolma La, 5,200m. before descending to the gradual field towards Zuthulphuk for the overnight stay after 5-6 hours walk. Zuthulphuk (4760m) 18 km/9-10 hrs. After early breakfast, group will set off as the sun's ray’s break over the ridges above. After the footbridge the trail rises up a rocky slope. Take this gently but steadily. It soon reaches a level walk. The peak of Mount Kailash rises to the right and can now be seen linked to a long spur, which joins the eastern ridge. This is the top edge of the glacial valley from which the Lhachu ("Divine River") flows. This day is the climax of this holy journey and is the most difficult day of our journey. One has to pass through Drolma La Pass-5680m-highest altitude on this tour. Physically it is the most arduous day. At the pass is a large boulder depicting Tara, festooned with prayer flags. Here too Tibetans leave a memento of themselves such as a tooth, a lock of hair or even a personal snapshot. After perhaps 30 minutes, we descend a steep, rock-strewn path to the valley below. Just below the pass is Lake Tu-je Chenpo Dzingbu (Gauri Kund) i.e. "The Pool of Great Compassion". Take great care now because it is easy to sprain your ankle or worse. You must negotiate steep staircases down to a snowfield. The only way down is to jump from boulder to boulder across a large rock fall. On the ridge above is a formation known as the Lekyi Ta-ra ("Axe of Karma"), as though one's moment ripen in an accident, suffering or death. A final steep descending staircase brings you to the valley floor. From here it is still about 5 hours to the day's destination with no shelter in between. It is vitally important to remain on the right hand side of the river, the West bank. If not, you will get trapped, unable to cross it. The walk now becomes very pleasant and relaxing (as long as the weather is clear and there is no howling gale.) The path follows the gentle slope of the valley over grassy fields and clear brooks for several Kilometers before it narrows and turns further south to merge with another valley before reaching Zuthulphuk, the "Miracle Cave" of Milarepa. The eighth day of Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is very significant. Dinner and Overnight at local guest house.
This is an easy day of the whole trip. The morning can be spent exploring the caves and visiting the temples and shrine that has been built around Milarepa's cave. The winding gradual tracks finally end our holy pilgrimage drive 10 km/4-5 hrs and continue drive to Purang for overnight stay. Overnight at local guest house.
On the 10th day of Kailash Mansrovar yatra, you will take a morning flight to Simikot by Helicopter and drive to Sher, descend down to Hilsa (30 minutes trek). The Helicopter will ferry the group to Simikot and from there we will be taking scheduled flight to Nepalganj. On arrival transfer to hotel. Evening: Dinner at local restaurant with cultural dance show. Lunch and overnight at hotel.
After breakfast at the hotel transfer to international airport fly to home.
